The short version
- You don’t need an account. We don’t ask for your name, email or location.
- Your answers, your moral profile and your calibration score stay on your device. We never receive them.
- When you vote, we add your vote to anonymous totals and note that this app install has voted today, not what it chose.
- We use a small number of service providers (Google Firebase for our servers, Sentry for optional crash reports in the app) and nothing for advertising. We don’t sell or share your data for advertising, and we don’t track you across other apps or websites.
- This website uses no cookies, no analytics and no third-party scripts. Fonts are served from our own domain.
- You can delete everything at any time: Settings → Privacy → Delete my data.
- Torn is for people aged 13 and over.
If you’re 13–17: the short version for you
- Your answers are yours. What you pick, your streak and your moral profile are saved only on your phone (or in your browser). We can’t see them, and nobody else can either unless you choose to share.
- We don’t know who you are. We don’t ask for your name, email, school or where you live. The app just gets a random code so it can count each vote once.
- Your vote is counted, not stored. When you vote, we add it to the totals everyone sees. We don’t keep a record of what you chose.
- No ads, no selling your data, no tracking you around the internet.
- You’re in control. Reminders are off unless you turn them on, and they never come between 10pm and 7am. You can delete everything any time: Settings → Privacy → Delete my data.
- Your moral profile isn’t a label. It shows how you’ve answered so far, and it changes as you do.
- Thinking of sharing a result? Anyone you send it to will see your answer. That’s up to you, and you never have to share.
- If a dilemma upsets you, you can skip it. In the UK you can talk to Childline free on 0800 1111.
- Worried about something? Talk to a parent, carer or teacher, or email us at hello@dailymoraldilemma.com. You also have the right to complain to the ICO (ico.org.uk).
1. Who we are
Torn is run by Levin Chakravorty, based in the United Kingdom. We are the “controller” of the personal data described here.
Contact: hello@dailymoraldilemma.com
Torn is offered in the United Kingdom and outside the EU/EEA for now. If we start offering it in the EU/EEA, we will name an EU representative here.
2. This website
The website at dailymoraldilemma.com is a set of static pages.
- No cookies. We don’t set any, so there is no cookie banner.
- No analytics, no advertising, no third-party scripts or embeds. Fonts and images are served from our own domain.
- Your theme choice (System, Light or Dark), if you pick one, is saved in your browser’s local storage. It never leaves your device.
- Server logs. Our host, Google Firebase Hosting, necessarily processes your IP address and browser details to deliver the pages and protect against abuse. We don’t turn on extra request logging and we don’t use these details to identify or profile you. Legal basis: legitimate interests (running and securing the website).
3. The app: what we collect, why, and our legal basis
| What | Why | Legal basis | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| A random app ID created when you first open Torn (not linked to your name, email or phone) | To count one vote per install, prevent abuse, and let you delete your data | Providing the service you asked for (contract) | Until you delete your data, or 13 months after you last use the app |
| A “voted” record: app ID + which day’s dilemma + time. It does not record your choice | To stop duplicate votes and keep streaks honest | Contract | As above |
| Your vote and prediction, sent once to add to the anonymous totals. We don’t store them against your app ID | To show the worldwide split | Contract | The totals are anonymous and kept permanently. Your individual vote isn’t kept |
| Technical data: IP address, device or browser type, app integrity checks | Security, fraud and abuse prevention, keeping the service running | Legitimate interests (security) | Held by Google for a short period (typically weeks) |
| Crash reports: what went wrong, device model, OS and app version. No app ID, no IP address stored | To fix bugs | Your consent: only if you switch crash reports on. Not offered to users under 16 | 90 days |
| Web reminders only: if you turn on reminders in the web app, your browser gives us a push “address” | To send the daily reminder you asked for | Contract. Your browser also asks your permission | Until you turn reminders off |
| Messages you send us | To reply, handle requests and complaints | Legal obligation / legitimate interests | 2 years after we close your request |
What stays on your device only: your answers and predictions, history, streak, reminder settings, moral profile and calibration score. Because this information could reveal your moral or philosophical outlook, we designed Torn so that we never receive it. If you uninstall the app or delete your data, it’s gone.
What we don’t do: no advertising, no selling data, no cross-app tracking, no advertising ID, no location, no contacts, no analytics SDKs. We don’t make any decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects.
4. Who we share data with
Only with service providers who process it for us under contract:
- Google (Firebase): website hosting, servers, database and security checks. Our database is in London (UK). Google runs the sign-in/ID service (Firebase Authentication) in the United States.
- Sentry: optional crash reports in the app, stored in the EU (Frankfurt).
- Apple / Google (Play Integrity): checking that requests come from the genuine app.
- Browser push services (Apple, Google, Mozilla): web reminders only.
We may disclose information if the law requires it.
International transfers: where data goes to the US (for example Firebase Authentication), we rely on the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and/or the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the standard contractual clauses.
5. Your rights
You can ask to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to our use of your data, or to receive a copy. You can also withdraw consent at any time (for example, turn off web reminders).
- Quickest: in the app, Settings → Privacy → Export my data or Delete my data.
- Without the app: email hello@dailymoraldilemma.com with the transfer code or data file from your app if you have one, so we can find your app ID.
- Deletion removes your app ID, “voted” records and any reminder subscription from our servers straight away. Backups roll off within 14 days. Anonymous vote totals can’t be linked back to you, so they aren’t changed.
We reply within one month.
6. Complaints
If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your data, please tell us first at hello@dailymoraldilemma.com. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk, 0303 123 1113) or, in the EU, to your local data protection authority.
7. Age
Torn is for people aged 13 or over. The app asks which age range you’re in and keeps the answer only on your device. We use it to block under-13s and to apply extra protections for younger users. We apply the UK Children’s Code privacy standards to everyone. If you believe someone under 13 is using Torn, contact us and we’ll delete their data.
8. Security
Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and at rest by our providers. Access to our systems is limited and protected by two-factor authentication.
9. Changes
If we change how we use data, we’ll update this policy and tell you in the app before the change takes effect. Where the law requires it, we’ll ask for your consent first.
